In the past decades, the number of exoplanets discovered by astronomers has reached more than 4000, soliciting new thoughts regarding our position in the Universe and the essence of life. Though it is now known that the formation of planets is not unique to the Solar System, how to form a lively planet, like our Earth, remains to be understood.

The Center of Astronomy and Gravitation, College of Science, presents a series of exoplanet conferences this spring and invite you to wonder in the world beyond the Earth. The events begin with a first lecture on 25th May, brought to us by Professor Didier Queloz, Nobel Prize Laureate inn Physics 2019, on the most recent studies of exoplanets. Prof. Queloz discovered 51 Pegasi b through the Doppler effects of stellar spectrum. It was the first exoplanet orbiting around a Sun-like star ever known. Until today, the understanding of exoplanets has undergone several revolutionary change: from discovery to studying their physical properties and formation mechanisms. This groundbreaking discovery was therefore acknowledged with the Nobel Prize in Physics.

On 30th May, Professor Wen-Ping Chen from National Central University will discuss the necessary criteria for life to develop on a planet. On 6th June, Dr. Pin-Gao Gu will share with us the anecdotes happened during our search for exoplanets.

Conference Information and Registration

Speaker: Didier Queloz (Nobel Prize in Physics 2019, Jacksonien Professor of Natural Philosophy
Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge & University of Geneva)
Title: The Exoplanet Revolution

Abstract: The wealth and diversity of planetary systems that have now been detected modified our perspective on planet formation as a whole and more specifically our place in the Universe.
